Plummer-Vinson Syndrome Developing during Treatment for Pernicious Anaemia

A case is reported of a patient who had been treated for pernicious anemia for 29 years and who developed severe sideropenic dysphagia. The complex interrelationships between iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency and abnormalities of gastric and pharyngo esophageal epithelia are outlined, and the implications are discussed in relation to the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of pernicious anemia.
