Plasma volume was determined in rats aged 1 to 30 days postnatally with the dye dilution technique using Evans Blue (T 1824). Blood volume was calculated from plasma volume and haematocrit. Plasma and blood volumes are largest after birth (5.84 and 8.65 ml/100 g body weight). Plasma volume decreases to about 524 ml/100 g on day 20 and then remains stable. Blood volume decreases up to day 20-24 (to 7.38 ml/100 g) and then rises slightly (7.95 ml/100 g on day 30).
