Pharmacological studies on heparinoid SP 54

Anticoagulant effect, lipemia clearing activity and several pharmacological properties of heparinoid SP 54 were studied in comparison with those of heparin. Heparinoid SP 54 (Bene Chemie) prolongs the clotting time and prothrombin time of the blood. In these aspects, heparinoid SP 54 is 1/10-1/20 as potent as heparin (Takeda). Following incubation of fat emulsion and blood plasma obtained from rabbits injected with SP 54 intravenously, the turbidity of the emulsion becomes progressively clear. Addition of SP 54 to the lipemic plasma in vitro fails to clear it. The lipemia clearing activity of SP 54 is as potent as that of heparin. SP 54 increases the leucocyte count within 10 minutes after intravenous injection, but does not cause any significant changes in bleeding time, blood platelet count, blood pressure and respiration in rabbits. The drug has no effect on isolated frog hearts.
