The requirements for a suitable "intermittent positive pressure breathing" apparatus (IPPB) to be used on conscious and unconscious individuals are discussed. Simple respirator units must be characterized by adequate flows, easy patient actuated cycling mechanism, means of adjusting the amt. of dead space in the connection between mask and respirator, safety and simplicity in operation, and adequate humidification. The IPPB has been used on a variety of disorders: acute pulmonary edema; depression from barbiturates, CO, or alcohol; CNS paralysis; acute asthmatic attacks; post-operative lobectomy and thoracoplasty as a training aid. Strikingly favorable results were obtained with cases of pulmonary edema. It is suggested that IPPB has a wide possible usage as a therapeutic device.
