One of the traditional errors as to occupational health is that in the United States prior to 1900 essentially there were no publications. It is customary to give finality to the matter by stating that the total number of scientific articles did not exceed 20. Indeed, in those publications in the United States during the first quarter of the century it was customary to draw heavily as to citations upon the European literature and usually with the apologetic statement that nothing comparable was available in this country.
