The authors review the literature on the cardiotoxicity of emetine. They report the methods and results of the present research performed in vitro on the heart and coronary flow of guinea pigs and in vivo on the heart, coronary flow and blood pressure of dogs. Finally the present results are discussed and compared with the data found in literature. The typical signs of emetine cardiocirculatory toxicity, e.g.,hypotension and electrocardiogram (ECG) changes, seem to be due to a direct depressant action on the myocardium without any primary interference with coronary circulation.
