Intraperitoneal administration of Agrobacterium tumefaciens into mice could damage both liver and kidney tissues, possibly by affecting the hepatic infrastructure as well as by disrupting the renal organization, as revealed by light microscopic examination of the two tissues. Electron microscopic investigation showed damage of subcellular organelles as well as the presence of intracellular inclusions. This was found to be associated with simultaneous alteration in the enzyme activities in mitochondrial and lysosomal fractions. The enzymes involved in the antioxidant defense system in liver appeared to be perturbed by bacterial invasion. There also occurred an increase in lipid peroxidation values and increased glutathione peroxidase activity.
