Alterations in lipid profiles and lipid peroxidation were studied in the different regions of the central nervous system (CNS) of aging rats, following restraint stress for 24 h. The 6 month old rats, the concentration of total lipids, cholesterol and phospholipids were increased in various regions of the brain but decreased in the spinal cord. However, the ganglioside and the rate of lipid peroxidation were decreased in the cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem after 24 h restraint stress. On the other hand, in 12 month old rats, the levels of total lipids, cholesterol and gangliosides were depleted in various regions of CNS, except the cerebellum. The phospholipids decreased, while the rate of lipid peroxidation increased in all the regions of CNS, after restraint stress for 24 h. Regional heterogeneity was apparent not only in the concentration of lipids and lipid peroxidation in the various regions of the rat brain, but also following restraint stress.
