Pulmonary zygomycosis in a bovine fetus

PM examination of a 7-month-old aborted fetus from a crossbred cow revealed no gross lesions. Absidia corymbifera was isolated from the stomach contents of the fetus and fungal hyphae morphologically resembling those of A. corymbifera were seen in histological sections of the lungs. Changes seen in the lungs included thickening of the connective tissue of pleura and interlobular septa because of oedema, infiltration by macrophages and lymphocytes and necrotic areas. Adjoining alveoli were secondarily replaced due to the advancing lesion from the interlobular septum. Bronchi and bronchioles were almost unaffected. A few blood vessels in the affected area were thrombosed and fragments of fungal hyphae were seen in the thrombus, suggesting haematogenous spread of the infection.
