Cross-sectional data on migration by duration of residence can provide information on temporal distribution of migration during a given period. This paper first discusses the availability and comparability of different data sources on inter-regional migration by duration of residence in India. It then goes on to analyse patterns of inter-regional migration with reference to sectoral (rural and urban) composition, gender characteristics, and reasons for moving. Population Census Reports (1961 census to 1981 census) and National Sample Survey Reports were used in the study. Four important reasons accounting for inter-regional migration in less than one year are employment, education, family move, and marriage. Employment and educational reasons have a dominant influence on male migration and marital reasons have a decisive influence on female migration to both rural and urban areas.
