The analysis of the 1961 population from 15 states, shows there were 25 million males who migrated during 1957-61 from one place to another. More than 80 per cent. of the movement was within the same state. Even among those 20 per cent. who migrated from one state to another, the majority were migrants between contiguous states. The contribution of four flows, viz., rural-rural, urban-rural, rural-urban, urban-urban to the total movement during this period in 15 states was about 55 per cent., 5 per cent., 26 per cent., 13 per cent. respectively. In Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Madras, though they were not losing states, the percentage of migrants in the male population was higher than the average of 15 states. In Maharashtra the percentage of migrants was much higher than all the states and there was considerable mobility within the state. Maharashtra and Mysore were the two states where migrants constituted a larger percentage of rural male population than in other states.
