Patterns of inter- and intra-regional inequality: a socio-economic approach

The regional development pattern of five regions, Northern countries, Southern countries, tropical America, tropical Asia and tropical Africa is studied using two indices based on a group of representative socioeconomic indicators. The analysis is based on measures of 'inequality' and 'mobility'. Comparison of results using these indices and the per capita gross domestic product (PCGDP) reveals that while the situation with respect to PCGDP has worsened over the years, but with respect to the socioeconomic indicators has become better. The study uses two composite socioeconomic indices based on the Principal Component method, (i) with infant survival rate, adult literacy rate, and life expectancy (years); and (ii) with all nine variables, urban population (% of total), life expectancy, calorie supply per capita (% of requirement), infant survival rate, physician per thousand population, adult literacy rate, teacher pupil ratio (primary), energy consumption per capita (kg of coal equivalent), and passenger car per thousand population. The study also indicated that irrespective of convergence/divergence within regions the relative position of countries with the regions have remained the same.
