Effect of metronidazole on immune mechanism in experimental animals

Metronidazole (10-100 mg/kg) significantly inhibited serum antibody titre against TAB vaccine in the rabbits. It also caused a significant decrease in serum anti-SRBC haemagglutination titre in doses of 50-200 mg/kg. The delayed type of hypersensitivity as revealed by footpad thickness was also significantly inhibited in mice treated with metronidazole (100 and 200 mg/kg). Metronidazole appears to have an immunosuppressant action by altering the functions of T-lymphocytes.
