Leukocyte functional activity in acute posthemorrhagic anemia

It was demonstrated in experiments on unbred and linear albino rats that the functional activity of lymphocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils is reduced (diminished phagocytic and migration activity and reduced capacity for rosette formation) in posthermorrhagic anemia. This is evidently the underlying factor of the frequent development of inflammatory complications in anemias. Antigenic stimulation in anemia has no essential effect on leukocyte function. Peritoneal macrophages of intact animals and rats with anemia produce active substances which stimulate erythroand myelopoieses in vivo and change the functions of the leukocytes.
