Lymphocyte fine structure in the bursa of fabricius, the thymus, and the germinal centers

The fine structure of the lymphocytes in the bursa of Fabricius and the thymus of the chicken were compared. The most striking difference was in the cytoplasmic ribosomal population and distribution. Lymphocytes indistinguishable from bursal lymphocytes were found within the splenic germinal centers. The bursal type of lymphocytes in the splenic germinal center appeared to undergo transformation to become hemocyto-blasts which were in turn the precursors of the plasma cells, thus linking the bursal lymphocyte to the plasma cells as a single line of cell differentiation. The bursal type of lymphocytes, preplasmacytes, and plasma cells were absent from the spleen of the bursectomized-irradiated antigen-stimulated bird.
