Bursa of Fabricius isolated from the cloaca in chickens at hatching: preliminary study

Anatomy and physiology of the bursa of Fabricius in the chick was studied in an effort to clarify questions concerning this organ which persists for several months into adult life, and its similarity to the thymus in man. The bursa was removed from cloaca of 20 newly hatched chicks. It was completely separated without changing the vascular and neural connections. The chicks were sacrificed between the 3rd and 14th day after surgery; in 2 wks follicles of the bursa regained complete morphologic maturation. Comparing histology of the bursae in operated chicks with intact controls of the same age, structures were morphologically identical. The intestinal tract of the chick does not influence.sbd.at least not after emergence.sbd.evolution of the histologic bursal pattern, and bacterial invasion of the bursa is not a determinant in conditioning lymphopoiesis.
