Presence of peroxidase enzyme in bursa of fabricius was determined in chicken of different age groups. The peroxidase activity was found in the mitochondrial fraction of the bursa in an optimum pH 5.25 and 0.8 .mu.mole substrate concentration. The highest activity was obtained from the bursa of 21-28 days old chick when the proliferation of lymphatic tissue was also high. Single injection of dexamethasone (500 .mu.g/100 g body weight) caused about 47% inhibition of the bursal peroxidase. As no incorporation of radioactive iodine was obtained in bursa, the role of peroxidase in the immunological function of the organ is suggested.
