The similarities between the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) of mammals and follicles of the avian bursa of Fabricius are reviewed and further investigated. Rabbits deprived of GALT were incapable of responding to a primary antigenic stimulation (Brucella abortus) but showed normal secondary responses (Br. abortus and sheep erythro-cytes). They failed to repopulate thymus-indepen-dent areas in lymph nodes and spleen.
