Effects of the denervation of the pectoral muscle upon bursa of Fabricius, thymus and adrenals in chickens

The right pectoral muscle was denervated in three groups of eight chicks, at two, 14 and 30 days of age, all being killed ten days after denervation. The weights of the bursa of Fabricius and thymus were increased in chicks operated at two and 14 days, but not in those operated at 30 days. Adrenal ascorbic acid content was increased in the 30-day group, reduced in the 14-day group, but was about the normal level in the 20-day group. Possible mechanisms of these phenomena were discussed.
