Experimental canine herpesvirus in the gnotobiotic dog

I/p and s/c inoculation of a virus isolated from a dog with lymphosarcoma, into 20 germ-free puppies 1-8 days of age resulted in death of all except one. Survival rate was high when inoculation was carried out after eight days, although clinical symptoms developed. As in ordinary dogs, transmission occurred by contact, and the disease caused necrosis of various organs and widespread haemorrhage, apparently related to the greatly lowered platelet count.
