Prevalence of bovine herpesvirus 4 in the Swiss cattle population and possible serologic cross reaction with bovine herpesvirus 1 (IBR/IPV virus)

An isolate of BHV-4 was recovered from the lung of a bovine fetus, and of 1212 animals tested by indirect immunofluorescence assay, 51 (4.2%) displayed antibodies against BHV-4. It was observed that animals infected with BHV-4, irrespective of the antibody titre, only occasionally gave positive serological results when evaluated with antigens of BHV-1, and vice versa. Further studies implied that cross-reacting sera most likely originated from animals following infection with both BHV-1 and BHV-4. It was thus concluded that cattle infected with BHV-4 do not interfere with the ELISA currently used for the serological detection of BHV-1-infected animals.
