Three women with rheumatoid arthritis developed cholestatic jaundice shortly after parenteral gold salt treatment was started. Other etiologies of obstructive jaundice were ruled out. The diagnosis of drug-induced hepatotoxicity was supported by other clinical signs (pruritus, dermatitis, stomatitis) and by laboratory indications of drug allergy (eosinophilia), as well as by positive specific immunological tests (migration inhibition factor and lymphocyte transformation test). Withdrawal of the drug brought about rapid and complete clinical and laboratory remission.
