The hepatoprotective effects of G. biloba extract (made in Turkey) were studied in rats with CCl4-induced liver damage. Hepatic malondialdehyde, glutathione and hydroxyproline concentrations and histopathologic alterations in liver specimens were assessed. The extract (200 mg/kg, p.o.) was given to rats for 10 days before administration of a single dose of CCl4 (2 ml/kg, i.p.). Pretreatment with the extract reduced hepatic malondialdehyde concentration significantly in CCl4-treated rats, but did not alter glutathione or hydroxyproline concentrations. Light and electron microscopic findings showed that the extract limited CCl4-induced hepatocyte necrosis and atrophy.
