The immunological studies have shown that the blood chalone level increases 2.8-fold during multiple bloodlettings in polycythemia vera (PV) patients. Single massive blood loss (as a result of cytopheresis) in some cases also leads to the blood chalone level rise. Activation of hemopoiesis after cytopheresis can be inhibited by administration of additional chalones to the patients. It is suggested that chalones participate in the development of remission in PV patients after their treatment by bloodletting.
