Results of examining the bone marrow stromal precursor cells in 12 healthy individuals and 22 patients with polycythemia vera are presented. In polycythemia the number of the fibroblast precursor cells substantially increases. A direct correlation between the total cell content in the bone marrow and the number of stromal colony-forming cells per bone marrow volume unit was revealed. Treatment with imiphos led to a diminution of the total cell content in the bone marrow and the number of the fibroblast precursor cells, the decrease of the latter being greater. Half a year after the end of therapy the number of colony-forming stromal cells was restored. The stroma apparently plays a role in the pathogenesis of polycythemia.
