Colony-forming capacity of fibroblastic cells--bone marrow precursors--in patients with B12- and folic acid-deficiency anemias and liver cirrhosis with hypersplenism

The colony-forming efficiency (CFEf) of fibroblastic bone marrow precursor-cells was studied with the use of monolayer cultures in 22 patients with megaloblastic anemia induced by B12- and folic acid deficiency, and in 5 patients with cirrhosis of the liver attended by hypersplenism. The CFEf was found to be significantly increased in the patients studied. There apparently is a relationship between the growth of the number of stromal (fibroblastic) precursor-cells and the increase in the cellularity of the bone marrow and in the amount of granulocytic precursor-cells which are observed in such diseases.
