Comparative characteristics of cultivating granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming cells in the bone marrow and abdominal cavity in situ

The ability of allogeneic stem hemopoietic bone marrow cells, committed to granulocyte monopoiesis, to form colonies when transplanted into the bone marrow and peritoneal cavity of intact rabbits, was studied with the use of agar capillary diffusion chambers. The humoral surrounding medium of the bone marrow was found to create more favorable conditions for realization of the proliferative potentialities of the granulocyte macrophagal colony-forming cells, than the abdominal cavity. Specific surrounding medium of the abdominal cavity enhanced mostly the growth of macrophagal colonies, whereas granulocyte hemopoiesis prevailed in the bone marrow.
