A study designed to assess whether adipogenic activity in human serum could have some physiological significance in adipocyte differentiation used 3T3-F442A cells as an assay for such activity, and showed that serum from pregnant women in the last trimester and serum from umbilical cord blood both contain adipogenic activity which promotes adipose differentiation of 3T3 cells. This activity increased 3-4 fold in maternal serum after 25-28 weeks of pregnancy; late gestation amniotic fluid, however, had a very low activity. The maternal serum activity decreased sharply 1 day after parturition to non-pregnancy levels. It is concluded that this activity may be important in the differentiation of adipose tissue.(wz)
