Phosphonate esterase activity in blood serum during early pregnancy

The levels of blood serum phosphonate esterase activity were estimated in nonpregnant women who were aged between 17 and 48 yr and for comparison in 5 series of women who were presumed to be pregnant and who had amenorrhoea of 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 wk respectively. A significant rise in serum enzyme activity was found from the 4th wk onwards, with a mean rise of 70% as compared with the women who were not pregnant. The rise in phosphonate esterase activity in blood serum can be used as a biological enzyme test from early pregnancy onwards.
