Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was tested in women classified into the high-risk pregnancy group; the results were compared with those in a physiologic gestation course. The group consisted of 263 women aged 17-40 yr; in it were 60 healthy nonpregnant women, 131 healthy pregnant subjects, 25 with threatened preterm delivery, 24 women with protracted pregnancy and 23 women with signs of late toxemia of pregnancy. The nonpregnant and healthy pregnant subjects presented normal laboratory test values and did not present any complaints. The risk pregnancy cases were diagnosed through past history, general clinical examination and specific obstetrical examinations. Blood samples were collected on fasting and the LDH activity was estimated. The comparison of results between groups demonstrated that the LDH activity tends to rise along with pregnancy advancement, the pregnancy complications did not influence significantly this activity rise. LDH estimation in pregnancy has insignificant value in diagnostic and prognostic aspects.
