Rheography was used to study the pulmonary circulation and the central hemodynamics in 32 volunteers and 57 patients radically operated upon for cancer of the rectum during inhalation of a He-O2 mixture. The pulmonary circulation increased to a greater extent with inhalation of the He-O2 mixture than with respiration of pure O2. In the early post-operative period the number of cardiac contractions decreased by 4-8 beats/min and the arterial pressure decreased by 10 mm Hg. Corresponding to the increase of pulmonary circulation the stroke and minute volume of circulation increased up to 156.7 and 141.2%. With O2 they decreased down to 98.6 and 83.5%, respectively, from the initial figures. Inhalation of He-O2 mixture in the early post-operative period materially improved the indices of the central hemodynamics, bringing them closer to the pre-operative level. He apparently exerted a favorable effect on myocardial contractility.
