Inhibition of human and chicken skeletal muscle 3-phosphoglyceromutase by mercury is compared at various stages of development. In contrast to the marked sensitivity to mercury of 3-phosphoglyceromutase from adult skeletal muscle, the enzyme from embryonic skeletal muscle is insensitive to mercury. The mutase activity and sensitivity to mercury increases greatly during embryological and postnatal development.
