The pH inside the plantar cushion was measured in 6 young bulls from 3 to 60 minutes following the application of a tourniquet to the metacarpal or metatarsal region. Three groups of 6 legs each were treated as follows:- In group A a tourniquet only was applied; in group B, in addition, 15 ml of a 2% lidocaine solution and in group C 6 million IU of sodium benzylpenicillin were injected i/v distally to the tourniquet. In all 3 groups the pH in the plantar cushion dropped from 7.41-7.43 to 7.33-7.27, the decrease being statistically significant. The fall in pH was probably due to the ischaemia induced by the tourniquet. The i/v injection of the local anaesthetic and of the antibiotic had no further effect on the pH.
