Concentrations of lidocaine were measured in local and systemic plasma and tibiotarsal synovial fluid for 60 minutes after injection of the drug (10 ml, 2% w/v) into three veins, distal to a tourniquet, in the hind limbs of five calves. Lidocaine levels which were high but variable initially fell quickly over the 60 minutes. Low levels which were always present in the systemic circulation rose slightly during the 5 minutes after tourniquet release. This technique eliminated the risk of toxic effects due to lidocaine.
