Isolation and identification of bovid enteroviruses from free-living wild animals in Botswana

The bovine enterovirus type 1 strains were isolated from faeces and preputial, vaginal, nasal and eye swabs from five free-living African buffaloes (Syncerus caffer) and an impala (Aepyceros melampus). As the whole family Bovidae may be infected with antigenically related enteroviruses, it is more appropriate to classify this group as bovid rather than bovine enteroviruses.
