Isolation & characterization of enteroviruses from calves

Twelve strains of bovine enteroviruses isolated from rectal and nasal swabs of calves aged 1-4 months were characterized. They produced a poliovirus-like cytopathic effect in primary lamb kidney cell culture. They contained single-stranded RNA and were resistant to ether and chloroform, stable at pH 3, inactivated by heating at 50 deg C for 30 minutes, but were stabilized by molar MgCl2. They were classified into two groups by using standard sera against Burki's 100/60 (La Placa Gr. I) and 51/60 (La Placa Gr. II). Eleven belonged to group I and one to group II. Group I strains agglutinated rhesus monkey erythrocytes.
