Homology of repeated DNA sequences in mothbean, mungbean, and urdbean has been studied by DNA-DNA hybridization and compared to that of DNA sequences in cowpea. Urdbean exhibited maximum homology (83%) followed by mungbean (57%) and mothbean (53%). The heterologous duplexes were biphasic with a minor low melting fraction (19-28%) and a major high melting fraction (72-81%) with Tm values in the range 66.5-67.5.degree. C and 86.0-88.0.degree. C respectively. While the moderately high homology of repeated DNA sequences may be due to differences in centres of origin, the occurrence of nearly perfect duplexes (very low sequence divergence) suggests that nucleotide substitution has played a very limited role in the evolution of these repeats.
