Interrelationship of cobalt and iron absorption

The absorption of 59Fe and 57Co or 60Co as FeCl2 or CoCl2 was estimated by whole-body counting in male Walter Reed Carworth Farm rats. Fe deprivation and erythropoietin by vein increased both Fe and Co absorption. Fe overload decreased Fe and Co absorption. Injection of endotoxin and starvation led to decreased Fe absorption in normal rats and decreased Fe and Co absorption in rats deprived of Fe. Injection of FeCl2 by vein 24 h before a test dose reduced Fe but not Co absorption.
