Effect of copper and cobalt supplementation on caeruloplasmin Cu and total copper in bovine plasma and their interrelationship

For 2 months 15 cattle were given a normal diet without or with 12.64 mg Cu per 100 kg bodyweight alone or with 1.32 mg Co per 100 kg. Blood was sampled each month. Total Cu in plasma of controls was 70.0, of those given Cu alone 126.0 and of those given Cu with Co 102.6 micro g per 100 ml. Coerulo-plasmin Cu was 58.25, 94.9 and 92.6 micro g per 100 ml. The equation Y = --7.8+0.962 X where X was total Cu and Y coeruloplasmin Cu, showed a highly significant correlation between total Cu and coerulo-plasmin Cu in all. Values for controls and groups given supplements were significantly different but those between cattle given Cu alone and those given Cu and Co were not.
