Increasing concentrations of Fe were perfused through the duodenum of rats to obtain dose-response curves. A linear increase in the uptake of Fe by the intestinal mucosa occurred in rats with loaded, normal and decreased Fe stores, whereas there was a curvilinear relation between Fe concentration and Fe transferred from intestinal cells into the body. When an equimolar amount of Co was added to the perfusate, Fe uptake was unaffected except at high doses in Fe deficiency.
