Storage iron kinetics with reference to reticuloendothelial and parenchymal iron overload in rats

Kinetic studies of storage iron in rats were made by using control, reticuloendothelial (RE) and parenchymal Fe overload. In Fe-overloaded rats, the Fe content loaded was correlated well with total liver Fe, ferritin and haemosiderin Fe and serum ferritin concentration. The liver haemosiderin to ferritin ratio became larger as the Fe content load increased. Release of Fe from RE system was impaired and the incorporation of 59Fe into red blood cells was depressed in RE (chondroitin ferrous sulphate) and parenchymal Fe overload. In RE Fe overload, the ratio of haemosiderin to ferritin fraction was larger and in parenchymal Fe overload the ratio was constant, which might suggest a more rapid turnover of Fe in RE overload. In parenchymal Fe overload, desferrioxamine released the Fe in recently deposited ferritin fraction.
