"Stunting syndrome" in broiler chickens

Stunting syndrome was diagnosed in an outbreak of high mortality in 2-week-old broiler chicks. Some of the affected birds had swollen heads, with oedema of the neck and wattles. The two affected houses had received chicks from the same hatch from a single parent flock. The other five houses had received chicks from the same hatchery, but different supply flocks. Other chicks from the suspected flock were similarly affected on another farm. The suspected flock had had an unusual mortality pattern, with 1.2% mortality in the first three weeks of life.
