Enteric virus-like particles associated with a stunting syndrome of chickens

Virus-like particles, 40-55 nm in diameter, were observed in enterocytes in jejunal villi of 35 out of 62 stunted and healthy chicks aged 3-4 days from three affected farms. Degenerative changes were seen in the cells, particularly at the tips of the villi. Faeces and caecal contents from five 14-day-old stunted birds also contained these particles.
