Intestinal protozoal and helminthic infections in a university community

Examination of 4864 patients attending the Khartoum University Clinic, Sudan, revealed helminth or protozoan infections in 376 (7.7%). Giardia lamblia occurred in 188 (43.8%), Entamoeba histolytica in 111 (25.9%), Hymenolepis nana in 57 (13.3%), Strongyloides stercoralis in 23 (5.4%), Schistosoma mansoni in 17 (4%) and Ascaris lumbricoides in 16 (3.7%). Most of the infections were in cooks and waiters (25.8%), students (24.5%) and cleaners (17.8%). Tinidazole, pyrantel pamoate and oxamniquine gave high cure rates against protozoan, helminth and schistosome infections respectively.
