Incidence of helminthiasis and protozoal infections in Bombay

Helminth and protozoal infections were identified in 30 867 (61.74%) of 50 000 human faecal samples analysed from November 1964 to May 1969, in Bombay, India. Helminths were found in 17 555 (35.1%) of samples; roundworms were found in 6768 (13.5%), whipworm in 5626 (11.25%), hookworm in 4072 (8.14%), Hymenolepis nana in 545 (1.09%), threadworm in 516 (1.03%) and tapeworm in 38 (0.08%). Mixed infections of Entamoeba histolytica and hookworm were identified in 1219 (2.44%) of samples, E. histolytica and roundworm in 681 (1.36%) and H. nana and Giardia lamblia in 109 (0.22%). Helminth and protozoal infections were identified in 30 867 (61.74%) of 50 000 human faecal samples analysed from November 1964 to May 1969, in Bombay, India. Protozoa were found in 13 312 (26.62%) of samples; Entamoeba histolytica was found in 8025 (16.05%) and Giardia lamblia in 5287 (10.57%). Mixed infections of E. histolytica and G. lamblia were identified in 1319 (2.64%) of samples, E. histolytica and hookworm in 1219 (2.44%), E. histolytica and roundworm in 681 (1.36%) and Hymenolepis nana and Giardia lamblia in 109 (0.22%).
