Protozoal encephalomyelitis in horses

The correspondents speculate whether the renal coccidian Klossiella equi is the causative agent of cases of equine protozoal encephalomyelitis which have been reported from several states of the USA. In horses with this disease and infected with K. equi, protozoa in the nervous tissue and kidneys were seen to be closely similar. It is possible that ingestion of the sporocyts by horses is followed by sporozoite invasion of blood vessels and localization in endothelial cells in multiple tissues, including the central nervous system.
