Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis in a pony

A 10-year-old mare was killed 5 days after showing circling behaviour and becoming recumbent. Necropsy revealed a small yellowish focus of necrosis and mononuclear and macrophage cell infiltration in the medulla oblongata. Immature and mature meronts were seen in the neural tissue and the capillaries of the brain stem, containing mature and immature merozoites, resp. These findings were similar to those of equine protozoal myelitis in horses, and it is suggested that this disease may be related to Sarcocystis.
