Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis in southern Brazil

A 10-year-old Thoroughbred mare deteriorated when treated for lameness with high doses of dexamethasone. After euthanasia a multifocal necrotizing nonsuppurative myeloencephalitis was found with intra- and extracellular groups of round to elongated 2 micro m-long basophilic structures being observed in sections of the spinal cord. This is the first report in south America of a sarcocystosis previously described in the USA.
