Bacteriological examination of water supplies in the city of Bombay and Bombay suburbs

Samples were collected from 34 wells and from chlorinated piped water supplied by Bombay Municipality Water Works Department from Bombay City and suburbs. The potability index, presumptive coliform count, and presumptive enterococci count were determined. Detection of Clostridium welchii was attempted. Of 76 samples from 34 wells, 4% were potable. All chlorinated piped water in Bombay City gave potable samples. Fourteen per cent of unpotable samples gave high presumptive coliform counts in absence of Escherichia coli. Eighty-six per cent had high coliform count and presence of E. coli. Nine of 10 samples studied for enterococci contained Streptococcus faecalis.
