Clinical profile of intestinal helminthic infections from eastern parts of India

In India, 125 male hospital patients with helminth infections were investigated. Ascaris lumbricoides and Ancylostoma duodenale were the dominant species and more often occurred alone than in mixed infections. Trichuris trichiura, Strongyloides stercoralis and Taenia saginata were much less common. 75 of the patients were asymptomatic; their infections were detected during investigation for other ailments. The commonest symptoms in the remaining 50 patients were anorexia (in all cases), abdominal pain unrelated to food (20), burning pain related to food (22), cough and expectoration (20) and diarrhoea (12).
